Academic Major: Anthropolgy and Sociology
- It is a major that combines both fields of study into one major, in which I take a mixture of both Anthroplogy and Sociolgy courses.
- I have take two theory classes, a reaserch methods class, and a data analysis class, along with intrductory courses, and several electives
Acdemic Minor: Law and Society
- It is a interdisciplinary minor, in which I took a majority of Philosphy, Polical Science and History courses
Centennial Center for Leadership
- I have taken 3 half credit cources surrounding the topic of leadership: Leadership Theory 1, Leadership Theory 2, and Public Speaking
These courses and fields of study have broadened my worldview, letting me see how other cultures perceive things, but also allowing me to understand how society develops. They have really pushed outside my comfort zone, encouraging me to think more critically and questions ideas. They have taught me whenever I encounter a new culture to try and fully immerse myself in them. I have been fortunate to travel to 10 countries (side note, most of the picture backdrops have been from countries I have been to), and each time I go there I talk to locals and try to learn about the culture and the people, and see their understanding of life. The classes I have taken have shown me that we want to understand and listen, as well as think critically and ask questions of others. We want to learn from others and have others learn from us. Through my classes I have learned that we need to be open minded and supportive. In society it seems common to judge one another and think our ways may be better, but to question things, listen to others, and to understand where people are coming from are super important. I have learned that it is okay to be naive and ignorant as long as you are willing to grow from that. To think critically, to do my own research on things I am interested in or things I question, to take initiative, to think outside the box, to put myself in someone else's shoes, to question ideas, to stand up from what I believe in, to travel, to understand, and to listen, are all ideas and skills I have acquired from the classes I have taken at the colleges, and plan to keep with me as I grow as a leader.
After college I plan to take a year off and do a service related program such as Americorps, and then go to law school, where I plan to focus on international law or criminal law, or a mixture of the two if possible. I want to do a year of service in my country and help people in need of assistance. I feel that with what I have learned in many classes, it is important to help people out, but also to learn from those people and understand where they are coming from. Originally, I had decided that I wanted to do Peace Corps, but I changed my mind to deciding that I'd rather do service in the US because though a lot of my interests and fields of study have occurred because of my international travel opportunities, there have been several classes I have taken especially Introduction to Sociology, Race and Ethnic Politics, and Civil Rights, they have shown me that there is so much going on in my own country that I did not know about, and would love to help out in if possible. As a leader, it's okay to change your mind, but it is also important to help out and volunteer, and that is what I want to do before hopefully heading to law school. I do plan to go to law school and when I am there, I not only plan to grow as a leader and focus on my interests, but I also plan to become a stronger leader. I will also be going in with an open mind to listen and learn. Though it may be challenging, I am ready for it.
